So I checked this place out after searching for all you can eat sushi near College of DuPage. Reviews pointed me in the direction of Hokkai and I was not dissapointed. Location: Just next to the Trader Joes on Roosevelt Road, Hokkai is easy to miss. From the outside it looks like a quaint hole in the wall. You know what they say about don't judge a book by its cover? Well the saying applies here. I walked in and was immediately impressed by the wood walls and contemporary lighting. Everything has a modern look and there is a surprising ammount of dining space you wouldn't expect from the outside. The decor reminds me of city Sushi places but without the pretentiousness. I dig it. Food: I ordered the lunch ACYE for 15.99 and it was delicious. I had a couple pieces of sushi and 2 rolls. I also had the veggie tempura appetizer. It was piping hot and a great portion size. The sushi included octopus which can be hot or miss in some places but it was great here. Their spicy tuna has a good kick too. I had a Tsingtao with lunch and the waitress brought it out in an iced mug. Service: Very nice staff. Checked on me consistently and very friendly. Bonus points for the chilled mug. Overall I'd definitely recommend for lunch. Will update if I come for dinner. Cool place, affordable sushi, and good staff. I have a new place to eat between class now.

Fantastic dinner. Service was great. Friendly, helpful, and attentive. The apps were fresh and crispy. I had tempura scallops and shrimp, and they were high quality. The seaweed salad was fresh and flavorful. Even the fountain soda was worthy of a good comment because if you've ever had soda made with bad water, you'd appreciate the crisp clean taste of their Pepsi. There are many rolls to choose from. I had four, and they were all good. The rainbow roll was incredible. I would skip the volcano roll next time. Too "American". Heavy on the mayo and other sauce. Then I tried only three pieces of sushi because I was stuffed. Eel, octopus, and white tuna. Loved the eel, liked the octopus, the tuna was OK. I think I just got an edge or something because my tuna piece had one tiny edge of hard flesh. Overall, whether you're a veteran or brand new to Japanese cuisine, this is a winner!

This place really surprised me. It's in a strip mall but on the inside you would never know. The décor is very trendy. I dined here on all you can eat sushi by myself while I worked on my laptop. The sushi was good and the presentation was nice. I also ordered a glass of this jelly wine. It was a sparkling wine with jelly in it. Very interesting... Looking forward to coming here again.

I saw Hokkai as I was walking out of the nail salon a few doors down, and would never have given it a second glance until I read the sign saying "All You Can Eat"... I love AYCE sushi!! The restaurant is bigger inside and has a nicer interior than i anticipated... a complete surprise. It is in a strip mall next to a hair salon and a small clothing boutique. Goes to show don't judge a book by its cover. Hokkai has a $15.99 AYCE lunch menu, and a $20.99 AYCE dinner menu. Although I was going in for lunch, I asked if I could order off the dinner menu, they said it was fine. The rest of my group ordered off the lunch menu. The dinner menu is more robust, it includes apps such a seaweed salad and shrimp tempura. It also has more rolls that I wanted to order. And it had regular tuna sushi (piece of fish atop a small ball of rice), as opposed to white tuna sushi on the lunch menu. I started with seaweed salad, shrimp tempura, and scallop tempura. All were good. I ordered shrimp tempura, sweet potato, Hokkai, Rainbow, and Sweet 16 rolls. Hokkai was my favorite, the sweet potato my least fav. I did not see any dessert options on the menu, and frankly, was too stuffed to ask. The two reasons I'm giving Hokkai 3 stars instead of 4 is because: 1. They have no sashimi offerings on either lunch or dinner AYCE menus. 2. The service was spotty. The servers would all be standing around near the back, and multiple times I would make eye contact with one, she'd look right back at me, I'd wave, she'd look away, and another server would then head towards my table. I just found that kind of odd and inconsiderate. Otherwise, Hokkai is a solid choice for sushi in the Lombard/Glen Ellyn area.

Really like the place the all you can eat sushi deal is amazing and the sushi is top notch. Doesn't look like much from the outside but its really nice inside. Service is great. Really enjoyed the entire experience.

So so good! Everything was really fresh. I feel like the last several ayce sushi places I've been to, the waitresses/waiters are awkward and don't want to be dealing with people. Our waitress was a rockstar and kept our water glasses full. (I've been to places where they will avoid your table during the entire visit and never refill your glass.) We got a variety of the appetizers first. The miso soup and salad were delicious. The edamame had a bit too much salt for my taste but was still good. The gyoza was superb! Definitely never frozen. The crab rangoon was also really good. I got the green turtle roll (loved!), tuna avocado (one of my faves no matter where I go), and the rainbow roll (delicious!). My boyfriend got the chicago roll, Philadelphia roll, California roll, and shrimp tempura. I think my favorite was the Chicago roll. Will definitely be back!

This is seriously a hidden gem for AYCE sushi lovers. This place is located in a Strip mall where you have Traders Joe and Binny's. The restaurant is very clean, bathrooms are clean, service is decent and great quality for an AYCE sushi place. If i go there I would go more for Sashimi since its the best bang for the buck and they are quality cut of meats. I stop by here for a post workout meal after a heavy leg day ;)

I finally tried this place after reading raving review after raving review. I was in the area during lunch time so I ate off of their lunch AYCE menu. I think it may have been because I was eating lunch and not dinner that I didn't have my socks blown off. Don't get me wrong, the sushi was good. It was fresh, the pieces were good sizes, etc. However, the lunch menu for me was a little vanilla. In reading other Yelper's reviews it sounds like dinner is the way to go here. I am going to have to make a point to come out to dinner here and try some of the Gyoza that Angela P is raving about - who doesn't like a dumpling? It sounds like they have more variety available during dinner too. I will say in looking at their regular menu, it looks like they have a great deal of options if you ordered that way as well.

Stopped on Labor Day and what a pleasant surprise! First of all, the building has been remodeled and it's gorgeous. The place was well staffed for a holiday weekend and the place was packed. Was my first time here - the wait staff was very helpful in explaining the menu and the "all you can eat" price for around $20 bucks. I took a chance on that option and was very impressed. Quality ingredients, great presentation and fresh. Had $35 worth of specialty rolls for the set price....and I was allowed to order more! Will return soon and have crossed all of the the DuPage County area Sushi places off my list. Try it....you will not be disappointed! PS - great Saki selection as well!

Holy.cow. This place is amazing. All you can eat menu has great rolls on it! And they gave us 10 pieces for many instead of the 8 like the menu said. Everything we tried was delicious. I would recommend the volcano roll, and rock and roll. I'm surprised we could walk out, it was so good that we just kept eating. Can't wait to go back, ok I can... And have to as my food hasn't even digested yet. But yummmmmmy

The BEST All You Can Eat Sushi I've been to. For $20.99 per person, the price is about average for all AYCE sushi places. FOOD: The sushi is so fresh. Period. My favorite item is the salmon nigiri. It's so pink and you can taste the freshness. The white tuna and unagi nigiri is also so good. All their rolls are delicious. Many different combinations. There are many different kinds of shrimp tempura rolls (which is what won over my fiancé). But the best thing about this place is that they don't over do it with the rice. Most AYCE sushi places will load up the rice to make you full. But not at Hokkai. They put a thin layer so you can actually taste the fish and fillings, not just rice. SERVICE: service is always friendly and fast. Food always comes out pretty quick and is always fresh. OVERALL: I've been to many AYCE sushi places and I would definitely recommend Hokkai. Best AYCE sushi in the suburbs and city! Great value without skimping on quality!

Presentation was amazing. Sushi came out all pretty, resting on ice & all sorts of cute flashy things. The salad that came out was simply iceberg lettuce with shaved carrots & dressing. It was a disappointment. Twister roll was tasty, but first thing I noticed was the aged avocado-- it's sides were browning. The sushi was tasty, it was just odd to me how the tuna & salmon sashimi were so loose-- it looked like it could shred as I held it up with my chopsticks. (Like tender fall-off-the-bone ribs) It's a pretty sushi place but the food (although good) wasn't fantastic enough for me to give it the full 5 stars. Giving Hokkai a 4 is pretty generous based on my first experience, but I would come here again. (2nd time I tried Hokkai, I got it to go, sushi held together better, skipped the salad, avocado wasn't brown. Yay.)

PEOPLE, THIS IS SUSHI AT ITS FINEST!!! Love this sushi place. My husband and I used to go to RA but we never really felt their sushi was authentic. Hokkai sushi is so fresh. I love their presentation of the sushi rolls. It is always presented differently, beautiful and very appealing. The price is reasonable as well. You really get a great deal. Very clean and they are hospitable. Anyone looking for REAL sushi and not overrated or overpriced - YOU NEED TO COME HERE!!! Forget the fake tasting Vegas Roll *cough* RA*cough.* RA Sushi is too americanized and the sushi is too decked out. Simplicity is the way to go. Love love LOVE Hokkai!!!

Enjoyed a mega sushi dinner with my small family and we were all thrilled with the food, service and decor. This is a little gem hidden in an unassuming strip mall. Great, fresh seafood, beautiful plating and lots of rolls and entrees to please all diners. We enjoyed everything from shrimp dumplings to sashimi to shrimp teriyaki. Run here and support this great local spot!

Our fav roll: angry dragon, chicago and rainbow. Valcano roll is good too. Goyza is awesome and so is the seaweed salad. Green tea is great!!

The sushi is great, amazing different combinations for an amazing price if you are getting the all you can eat and if you are not the prices are still incredible for a sushi of this grade

This place does NOT disappoint. Their AYCE is a bit smaller than certain places, but the cool thing is that they rotate rolls on it. I've gone twice over the past 6 months, and it's had 3 new rolls (at least) every time. The appetizers are really great, always come out hot, and they're high quality. And I have to say that I've been to a lot of AYCE sushi places, and this place tops all of them. Their presentation is really aesthetically pleasing as well as having a very neat (as in crisp) appearance. They are good with being attentive towards the customers and honestly, they're just friendly in general. Their rolls are all quality, I haven't had a bad one yet. They have great cuts for their tuna, and when I had one topped with seared tuna, it was perfectly seared. Even my fiancee who is somewhat leery of raw fish (but she loves sushi, go figure) thought it was perfect. I can't recommend this place enough. It's worth every penny in my opinion.

Hokkai is another great option for AYCE sushi in the suburbs. For $20.99 at dinner time, Hokkai's AYCE features soup, salad, appetizers, nigiri, and an assortment of maybe 15-20 rolls. Chances are, you've had Gyoza before, right? And it usually tastes the same, sometimes it's a little suspect that it was a frozen product. Not at Hokkai - this was some of the best gyoza on earth. It wasn't too chewy or over-fried. We ended up sharing 2 portions of these. We also shared 4 different types of rolls: Under Control: Spicy tuna and shrimp tempura, this was the favorite, and we repeated this roll in round 2. Rainbow: Super fresh fish on top of a California roll. You can't go wrong here. Volcano Roll: Spicy tuna with spicy mayo and some other spiciness, it was full of flavor but needed something else for texture. It was a bit too soft and mushy for us. Sweet Potato: The only other sweet potato roll I've had was deep fried, but this was not. I wasn't a fan of how firm/undercooked the sweet potato was. Yellowtail Avocado: Fresh, but a little bit "blah." Hokkai is nicer inside than many strip mall sushi restaurants. It has a trendy feel with the dark furniture, and the neon green and blue lighting up the walls. The music didn't match the vibe though, it was instrumental elevator music, but if they played some danceable pop tunes it would better match the decor and probably attract a younger, more hip, crowd. Hokkai isn't my favorite AYCE sushi in the suburbs, but it still stands on its own.

Absolutely in love with this place!! I've been here over 20 times and never had a bad experience! The sushi is beyond amazing; the presentation, the freshness, the quality and the variety of options are all fantastic, and for an ayce??? This is truly one of the best kept secrets in the suburbs!

I took my wife here for her birthday on the recommendation of Yelp reviews. We had a fabulous meal with great service by the owner himself. The food was fresh and abundant. Pricing is reasonable for the portioning. Best Malbec I've ever had which we promptly went over to Binnys to pick up a bottle after dinner to find out it was on sale. Dona Paula 2012 Estate Malbec. Yum. We had a Combo for 1 and teriyaki salmon. Both great. Presentation is very creative and inviting. (See Photo Below) We highly recommend this restaurant and will return again for sure.

I read about this place and decided to try it out. Overall a pleasant experience. The restaurant itself was very clean and presentable.I wish they would have included sashimi in the all you can eat special but I understand the economics of it. The variety was pretty good (you can see the menu online). This is the best thing I have to say about it. All the items were prepared from scratch, not left out in the open until it was picked up by someone. The staff was very attentive. As soon as you were finished, they would remove the empty plates. They were right there to take your new order also. The time taken from the pick up of the order to delivery was well within reason too. I got there early for dinner so traffic was very light. That soon changed and it got busy within a half hour. The speed, accuracy and attentiveness didn't change. I was impressed. Extremely great service, decent prices (AYE) and clean. I would definitely go back again.

Ok so the food was great but here's what stopped me from giving them a solid 4 star! 1:- The menu was quite limited for an all you can eat style restaurant. If you wanted something that you'd expect from a all you can eat sushi, you could order full price from the menu on top of the $15.99 pre tax all you can eat bar. 2:- Cheap practices. So the biggest turn off for me was the fact that you couldn't order sashimi and you could order sushi but here's the catch. They force you to eat the rice under the flesh which is a way to fill up your tummy. If I wanted to eat rice why would I come to this restaurant in the first place and to top it off if God forbid you leave the rice behind they threaten to charge you full price!! So in a restaurant where I'd be ok with paying $15.99 or $20.99 for dinner, I'd like to at least have the courtesy extended that it's my choice weather if I'd want to eat the rice or not otherwise I'd say I'm more happy at chipotle!! If your price band does not permit you to allow sashimi then make the effort of introducing another price band to please all those people who come there to enjoy sashimi and not the rice beneath it. 3:- The third thing that bothered me was the fact that the service quality for the ambiance offered was poor. Wave at a helper and they just plainly stare back into you. It's not like they are busy but when you see people don't respond to your request to call it just really ruins your entire dinning experience. So me giving this three stars was also pushing myself to not ruin there image and hope that the management reads this and takes some action towards it otherwise ambiance without quality is equal to an experience worth not having. Dine proudly! Regards, Umair Nazir.

We stopped in on Memorial Day, and they had their unlimited sushi deal going all day, not just for dinner. Its a great deal! Its the same as many other places, whatever sushi you don't eat you get charged full price for. This was a bit risky since we didn't even know if we'd like what we ordered since it was our first time, but everything was pretty good! The eel rolls were a bit too creamy for me, but the Chicago roll was awesome!

We've been several times, it's a favorite haunt for a girl's night out with one of my oldest and dearest friends. The wait staff never rushes us out and they are usually prompt with drinks and orders. Most everything is delicious and the all-you-can-eat is a great deal. The only item I do not care for is the banana sushi rolls. Just not my thing. Although it's in a busy strip mall, both of us usually find parking nearby and rarely have to park more than a row of cars away. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because Sushi Station in Rolling Meadows holds the #1 spot in my stomach.

What more can I say, this place is probably the best place in the western Suburbs for AYCE sushi. The menu is great and doesn't skimp from the dinner menu. The food is fresh and served nicely. The restaurant itself is trendy and clean. I recommend!

I was looking for a lunch place to cure my Friday night's hangover. In addition to eating to fulfill my growling stomach before Saturday grocery shopping. Shall I say Tada, I present to you Hokkai's AYCE sushi lunch menu special for $15.99! At first I wanted to select everything on the menu from "Miso" to "Rock & Roll!" Then my inner mind trumped my growling tummy. So by process of elimination, my inner explorer decided to have items on the menu that I either could not pronounce or have never had before. I saw Marumaki? What is that? So I ever so eagerly marked one on that appetizer as I "Googled" it as I awaited it's arrival to my palette. Online research states that it is a Chinese inspired "spring roll." The Chinese introduced it to Japan during migration and the Japanese customized it by adding country inspired ingredients. Maru meaning Spring and that this was a food eaten that season and "maki" means roll. Hence any "Maki" is rolled sushi. I added my favorite salmon sushi and a yellowtail jalepeno roll. Both with fresh flavor and I like the underestimated rice. Finishing off, I wanted eel. Who doesn't love a little "ponzu" sauce. Aha, at the bottom of the AYCE menu I was "Rock & Rolling!" I then pushed my adventurous limits and added on a "Rainbow Roll," which had salmon, white tuna, avocado and more! I think I have a pretty colorful day so far! Now time to work off my lunch if I can get myself to "roll" to Trader Joe's which is right next door for some groceries. All I have to say is "Hokkai" is a place to try!

Visiting from Dallas and read the reviews for this place. The only reason I was hesitant to try it is because normally when a sushi restaurant has the all you can eat special it is too good to be true. I'm a sushi snob. I don't like eating outside of my normal sushi places because it can be hit or miss, however this place was definitely a HIT! We got here around 5 o'clock on a Monday evening. The place was pretty empty, but not for long. Shortly after we got there the back room filled up. The restaurant smelled good and was exceptionally clean. We ordered probably 7 different rolls off the all you can eat menu for $20.95. The rolls were so fresh, had a lot of flavor and the combinations they use definitely complimented each other. The ratio of rice and fish couldn't have been any better. They are definitely generous with the fish and toppings! The presentation was very appealing. The batter on the shrimp tempura was PERFECT! Crunchy, hot and awesome flavor. Our favorite roll was definitely the Angry roll. We got regular sushi as well. The yellow tail and white tuna was so fresh and the amount of fish definitely outweighed the amount of rice and was so enjoyable. The miso soup was tasty and the green tea was amazing! I'm pretty sure they use the Brown rice, green tea here so it was definitely more than satisfying. If I'm ever back in this area I will be sure to come back to this place. The locals here are so lucky to have such an amazing sushi place around!! I would recommend anyone who loves sushi or high maintenance with sushi to come to Hokkai. You won't be disappointed!

AYCE sushi at another nondescript strip mall location. This is totally a thing here in the burbs and it's working out pretty well for us. Usually a random sign placed somewhere that reads "SUSHI". We wander in, get good treatment and decent food. That basically sums up this visit. A few of my favorite fellow Yelpers have written reviews here this year and while trying to decide where to eat a couple weeks ago, I stumbled across this spot. We headed over and found that the restaurant was located in the same strip mall as Trader Joe's. On a Sunday, this meant a bustling parking lot with minimal availability. We worked it out and went inside. No one was there. I didn't panic because I have faith in what my friends say, so we sat right at the bar and ordered it up. The waitress was friendly and the first round arrived pretty quickly. It was very good. Nothing stuck out as amazing, but it was good. Round two, I get creative and decide to try something unknown to me. The hubby makes sure to try most of his favorites and we are rounding the bend toward home... Uh oh... I'm stuffed. I realize there was something about an additional charge if I don't clear my plate. I've got half a roll left and I just can't muster up the chewing power or tummy space for these last gargantuan three bites. So, I pick one piece apart and get it down. I called it quits. My hubby just laughs at me for ordering such a large roll and he won't help because he's stuffed to the brim. Unfortunately for me, AYCE here means that if I don't finish a roll, they will charge the AYCE price plus the FULL cost of that roll. No way Jose! Give me another Sprite and go away. I've got this! And so with all the chewing power I could muster and every last inch of my digestional being, I ate those last two bites. I was dying. No more pleasantries from me. Just roll me to Trader Joe's, so I can walk some of this off. So lunch on Sunday is actually served at the dinner price. We didn't realize that until the bill arrived, but it was still reasonable. It's a nice little spot with good service, good sushi and some nice options. The décor was slightly odd and kinda made me feel like I was dining underwater with lots of reflective type materials used throughout. They are very firm on the finish it or we will charge you full price for whatever you don't finish rule. I wasn't a fan of that since been spoiled at other spots who charge an extra two dollars if I don't get those last two bites down.

Four sushi reviews in a row? Yes, it's true. I'm on the all sushi diet. It's totally a thing. I figure, mercury poisoning is as good a way to go as any. Just kidding... I could only wish my lifestyle were sushi diet/mercury poisoning luxurious. I just saved up my to-do list of sushi joints to review all in a row so I'd look really fancy to people who don't know me, or only read the first two lines of this review... which I suspect to be in the realm of about 99.5% of people who attempt to read any portion of anything I write. I was in town for just a few days and had a very short but incredibly important list of priorities: 1. Get hair done at Niki Moon 2. Have breakfast with Rick Bayless (name drop alert) and my Dad 3. Go to Riot Fest for the Flaming Lips with Danny W 4. Brunch with my favorite friend couple, Petar & Mandy 5. Get some quality AYCE sushi time in with the one and only Andres D... It's been Andres and my practically weekly tradition for years now and Dre is one of my most favorite people of all time so having recently moved across the country, we were long overdue for some sea-life grubbin: Enter Hokkai. I'd been wanting to come here ever since I got the 411 about this tucked away tiny gem in NOT-downtown Glen Ellyn from my lady, Laura C, and the time had finally come to give it a shot. I think we arrived around 2/2:30, so we were able to take part in all the All You Can Eat fabulous-ness and we started off like any other meal we share together, because we basically lunch Groundhog Day style and by now we know exactly what the other is going to want and say every time, so decisions are really easy. I really liked Hokkai's lunch AYCE menu because it allowed us to stick with our tradition where we start off with a perverted joke about someone we know and then I put in a double order of green tea and miso soup for the both of us, then once the ordering is done and I'm so full I have to take my belt off I tell Andres my plan to disassemble the leftover sushi that we're too full to eat and I'll throw some of it under the table so it looks like we ate it/that someone else's kid was just a messy eater and that way we don't have to pay full price for the last 3 wasted pieces, then Andres sternly tells me 'no' and that I should go to the bathroom to make more room, then we suck up the pain while he eats the last two out of three pieces and I choke down the remaining one while really hamming it up about possibly throwing up on the table. It's a real team endeavor and actually a lot cuter than it sounds. We got a crap-ton of stuff because food is my favorite drug. Here's just a hint of what we took down and what we thought of it: Green Tea: It was cold. It was rainy. This was needed. bit.ly/1t0EoVo Miso Soup: We start and finish with a miso because life feels better when it's bookended by bowls of miso soup. bit.ly/1t0EoVo Rock and Roll Roll: I don't usually like fried rolls, but this one was beautiful and damn good. Just look at that pic! bit.ly/1vJQjoC Octopus: Pretty darn delicious. bit.ly/ZrvToX Mackeral: Very mackeral-y... not exactly for me. bit.ly/1oLutfh Super White Tuna: Not bad at all. bit.ly/1CQCmIP Red Snapper: This was the business. bit.ly/1nbjtfJ Sweet Potato Roll: A favorite of Andres'. I think we actually got 2 orders of these it was so tasty. bit.ly/1oLuDmU Spicy Tuna Roll: This was my pic and it was just okay, I thought. bit.ly/1yIVc66 Eel & Avocado Roll: Another that was so good we got 2 orders of it. bit.ly/1pJTms8 Yellowtail & Jalapeno Roll: This was my favorite, and again we go two rolls of it because we have high metabolisms/ we don't care what anybody else thinks- we we're getting our $14.95 worth. bit.ly/Zrw1or At lunchtime on a Friday we were the only people in the place, which is lit more appropriately for a date night, but we obviously didn't let that hold us back from eating roughly the same amount a baby rhino would. The price is certainly a steal for lunch ($14.95) AYCE and we 100% got our money's worth and then some. If the next time I come back in town this place isn't around, I'll feel really bad because a part of me will know that we ate them out of brick and mortar with how much we ordered. Can't wait to come back and do this ( bit.ly/ZPAXV3 ) all over again with my bud.

Absolutely amazing. I can't believe this is an all you can eat sushi place, and that we only paid $21 per person for dinner. Everything we had was delicious, fresh, and a few rolls were worth getting repeats of (Sweet Sixteen comes to mind). The ambiance feels 2Trendy4Me but I can't wait to go back.

I loveeee coming here for all you can eat sushi. It's only $20 and include appetizers, sushi rolls, Dragon roll and volcano rollls are the best!!! I like to get my money's worth of nigiri sushi. I can get about 21 pieces if I'm really hungry, and if you do the math at any other sushi place, that will come out to be about $63 instead of $20 plus unlimited apps!

I went with my best friend on a Friday night after work. I got there around 8:45. It wasn't crazy busy but the place was full. I enjoyed the atmosphere and it's modernness. The host couldn't find any open tables so we settled for the sushi bar which was perfectly okay with me. My best friend and I both arrived there hungry and had a crazy craving for sushi. We had the all you can eat sushi for dinner and it was totally worth it! I got 4 rolls and he got 4 rolls. Second round I got 3 rolls and he did as well. Our last round was 3 rolls. We shared off of each other and they were amazing! Our favorite one was the rock n roll. It was delicious! My favorite basic roll was the Philadelphia. I love me some cream cheese in my sushi! Overall I had a great time and I plan on going there again! I do wish there were more selection on the all you can eat sushi dinner but hey, you can't have everything. If you're the person who loves great sushi and you don't wanna drive crazy far for it? Hokkai is definitely a great sushi place that you don't need to drive to the city to find.

Excellent sushi bar. We walked in and sat down right at the counter. The view was fine. The staff was friendly. Interestingly enough they were actually Japanese. Many sushi houses claim or act as if they were Japanese, which is where sushi originates as opposed to another Asian country. Nonetheless, my friend and I both elected to have the dinner special of all you can eat. The sushi came out and it was very good! Thick pieces of fish on not so huge rice rolls. I was very satisfied. My friend and I tried about every one of the single rolls. However, we didn't get through a fraction of the larger rolls. Everything was very good and i would certainly come back.

I am so disappointed (furious even). My boyfriend and I just got home from a terribly wasteful dinner. During my first visit with a friend of mine on an early Wednesday evening, when the restaurant was nearly empty, the service was excellent. I left with a happy, full stomach... you know the feeling, where you can't even stand up straight because it hurts with joy. So I wanted to share this gem to my boyfriend. I guess my mistake was visiting on a busy a Saturday night. It started off well, but the chefs completely missed my 2 octopus and 2 mackerel sushi from our first ticket. I ordered them again on our second ticket, giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they're out and didn't tell us. Or maybe they just forgot. Simple mistake, I guess... so I'll try again. I finally got the 2 octopus and the 2 mackerel, but then my boyfriend was missing his 1 gyoza order. HOW can you forget these order items when it's on a one-page ticket? ONE FRICKEN PAGE. Obviously there's some organizational issues here. We both sat there with no food on our table for what felt like forever. One of the waitresses even came by to ask if we were still waiting on our order, which we replied "yes". After another 30 minutes of nothing, I asked for the check. Never have I ever left an AYCE restaurant feeling hungry. It's just ridiculous and I am just so upset and disappointed. Spent $41.98 for 2 just to sit in a loud restaurant.

Wow! What a wonderful surprise! Sushi was tasty and well presented. Service was efficient. I will be back here - many times. I believe I have found my new staple sushi joint. Some rolls were a bit thrown together. Loosely rolled with the ratios off, but on the whole this place is a great value and exceeded my expectations. Let it be noted that if you order food you can't finish you pay full price. To me, this seems very fair.

I can't financially support Hokkai on my own, so I am calling on the help of the Yelp community. If this place closes down I will cry. You don't want to see me cry. If I could give Hokkai six stars, I would. I've been to at least fifty Japanese/sushi joints, and Hokkai was hands down the best sushi I've ever had. We arrived around 5:45 pm on a Wednesday evening for a casual birthday dinner. The place was empty and silent but completely stunning. The owners definitely invested in the decor and remodel. Don't let the exterior of the building fool you. Service was an A+. We were cheerfully greeted by every employee of the restaurant upon arrival. Our water glasses were always full and our server was beyond helpful. We ordered the Angel Roll, Twister, Rainbow Roll, Spicy Tuna, and Spicy Salmon. The presentation was incredible. The other reviewers are indeed correct; each and every roll was boasting an enormous amount of fresh fish and very little rice. Freshest fish I've ever tasted. It was just such an overwhelmingly enjoyable dining experience I still can't get over it, twenty-four hours later. I couldn't pick a favorite roll because they were all so amazing. Yes, even the simple $5 rolls, which I tend to shy away from. Oh, and the prices? Incredibly modest. I cannot say better things about Hokkai. I can't wait to go again!

Good place for sushi in the burbs. Also had the salmon teriyaki which was really good. I would highly recommend this place!

Went on Monday for all you can eat sushi. DELICIOUS! Awesome deal around $21 per person (plus beverages) and extremely fresh sushi. Lots of options for sushi and sashimi. You really can't go wrong with anything! Looking forward to trying the sparkling peach sake next time. Be careful, they are serious about the "if you don't eat it, you pay for it" rule...so go to Hokkai hungry and enjoy!

This will be a short and sweet one. For the $20 or so the AYCE costs, the Sushi is Fab. The service is good. I'm throwing 5 stars here based on the price. There are, of course better sushi restaurants. But I haven't seen one that is this good for this price.

  • Michael S.

Zero stars. Dirty. Dirty. Dirty. Food was less than tasty. Reasonably priced. The bathrooms should be avoided at all cost. The tables, floors, and booth area is dirty and sticky. Kitchen smells like rotten food and fishy.

We've ordered take-out from this place and have been very pleased with their sushi! The rice is tender and the fish is fresh. Unique maki combinations and close to home! This makes it a win-win. We have never eaten there inside the restaurant, but when I peaked around the corner of the sushi bar, I was pleasantly surprised by the fine-dining atmosphere it presented. Could be a great place to take the relatives when they are in town. Yes it is odd to have a sushi place in a strip mall....but the food is worth it. I think the more people find out about this place, the more the energy and vibe inside will improve. The service seemed welcoming and professional. Sushi chefs were also Japanese...always a bonus!

Please stop reading this and go to Hokkai. Now. I will tell you why when you get back. I have to quote a fellow Yelp friend, Laura C. "If this place closes down I will cry. You don't want to see me cry." No, I do not want to see Laura C. cry but more importantly, YOU do not want to see a grown man in his 40's cry so that is why you went. I do not need to write a review because you have experienced how fabulous this place is. You understand why I released one of my coveted five stars to this location as stingy as I am with them. However, since I hope to make "Elite" one day, I will go through the motions of writing a review that is not necessary any longer only so please placate me by scrolling to the bottom and writing all kinds of neat compliments that fill me with happiness but more importantly make me seem Yelp-relevant to those that do not know me yet. I am a bit of a snob when it comes to sushi. I would not dine out for sushi with on a first outing because you'd get the wrong impression...or perhaps worse the right impression...about me. So why is it great? It is good because it meets all my criteria 1. The fish is fresh. This sounds absurd that has to even be a rule because it should be implied when it comes to sushi right? Consistently fresh fish is difficult. Sure some places get it right most of the time. Like making bread, it is not as simple as it seems when on paper. When does the fish get flown in? Where do you source it from? Did boats run that day? In the late 1980's (while a week young lad so do not date me) I would NOT eat sushi in any place that was even OPEN on Monday. Yes...sushi OCD said you can't source fish on Mondays because boats don't go out on Sundays. Storage is difficult too. You have to store it until it turns over and it has to turn-over frequently enough that you do not store it for long periods of time. I have been to Hokkai over one dozen times and they have gotten it right every single time. Period. No exceptions. 2. The sushi chefs have exceptional knife skills. Sushi is about the art and respect behind the concept "here it is you do not need to adulterate it at all it is perfectly ready to go and already in bite size pieces and oh by the way it looks pretty". Getting portions cut right is the key to the proportion of the balance. Getting portions cut right and look pretty is like winning the daily double after betting your whole pot. They get it right. 3. They do not over-do it. Good fresh fish, good technique. That should be the star and it is. They get fancy-schmancy with some rolls but it is not the star. The backbone of what they do is this all-you-can eat thing. They have it for lunch and dinner but you get more stuff for more $$ at dinner. This is not a run-for-the-hills middle-of-the-road buffet-style stop-hyphenating type of all-you-can-eat. You get the real stuff. There are staples like miso soup and salad. There are real appetizer. Vegetable tempura that has the delicate outside shell and perfect crunch, gyoza (pork dumplings) harumaki (Japanese-inspired egg rolls that are piping hot so wait a minute before you bite into it otherwise you'll be doing that thing with your tongue to the burn at the top of your mouth for a few days) Like I mentioned previously, there are about two dozen maki rolls split about evenly between your standard maki and fancy-schmancy "special" roll. For your standard maki, all the tried-and-true players we have come to know and love are there. California roll...check. Spicy tuna roll...check. ...and so on. In the fancy-schmancy category you get some traditional items such as the rainbow roll (crabmeat, avocado, cucumber with strips of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and shrimp on top). However, there are some real winners here as well such as my personal favorite the Under Control Roll (spicy tuna roll high on shrimp tempura topped with delicious sweet and savory sauciness). There is also traditional nigiri sushi as part of the all-you-can-eat. Not surprisingly given the popularity and price, tuna is missing from all-you-can-eat. The rest-yellowtail, red snapper, shrimp and octopus to name a few are included. The one thing to note is that despite all this creating an image of "cheapness" by the all-you-can-eat label, it is prepared and presented in a manner that is anything but "cheapness" in vibe. You mark up a piece of paper with what you went, they disappear and re-appear with the goods in a trickle-in manner. Therefore, it is just like ordering off a menu and you can do it as often as your belt allows you to. Summary: the all-you-can-eat is a good value, great food. The fish is absolutely fresh and delicious. The staff are pros all around and good at what they do. BTW when I went to their web-site to check on a few detail I realized there are two locations. One in Darien and my frequent hope in Glen Ellyn. After reading this long-winded and self-indulgent review, you are clearly famished again so time to head back.

A friend and I visited this location at about 9PM on a Saturday night. There was another party there as well. The sushi was prepared very quickly which is a plus in an all-you-can-eat environment. However, the service was a little strange. Perhaps the servers were being over-attentative. It seemed as though they were over our shoulders out entire day. As far as the sushi, it was very fresh with a beautiful display. Highly recommended for large groups.

This has quickly become one of our favorite AYCE sushi places in the suburbs. Listen, the quality even rivals some non AYCE places. They are pretty quick. Some AYCE sushi places will slow play your second order. Not the case here. I've been amazed at how quickly they turn the sushi around and it's good! I have never had the regular menu, but I've heard it's decent too. The decor is a bit weird. Kinda strip club like? Lol. You'll understand if you go there. The super white tuna is great. So is the salmon. The only thing you can't get is regular tuna. (well not the only thing, but usually tuna is common at ayce) They have yellowtail with jalapeno, YUM! They also have light apps included in the AYCE, like fried scallops, gyoza, miso soup, salad. I usually don't want to fill up, but it's a nice way to start off the meal. I try to go once a month with my work lunch folks. Good stuff. Oh yeah the service is good too.

For buffet sushi, this is the best i've tried in chicagoland so far. I do want to go back and see if I have another great experience. With AYCE sushi joints, you generally get quality or speed of service. It's hard to find a place that will give you both. I feel like many AYCE places will intentionally slow down their service to limit how much you eat. Good quality ingredients, and the biggest selling point for me is basic nigiri sushi. Sometimes i just want fish on rice, no fusion rolls with bold sauces. This place will deliver. You can also get some nice appetizer menu options too like tempura or miso soup. For $21/person it is a fair price for buffet sushi with good quality and swift service.

I've lived in Glen Ellyn all my life and was excited but leary at a new Sushi place opening in the strip mall near Trader Joe's. This particular slot has never held a vendor for long, but after a long and expensive shopping trip on my growling stomach, I took the plunge and walked into Hokkai. The place was empty, which never scares me when I try a new Sushi place. Then again, it was 3pm on a weekday (nurse's life). The servers were extremly friendly and attentive. I ordered miso soup and three of my go-to rolls, avocado, spicy tuna, and yellowtail. The rolls were generously portioned, and AMAZING. I've never had sushi this good in the western suburbs. Their menu items are reasonably priced, and each plate was so artistically decorated I almost felt bad eating. I absolutely recommend checking out Hokkai, you won't be disappointed. I really hope they stay in Glen Ellyn for years to come!

I have finally found my #1 Sushi Spot when that sushi craving hits! I have dined here three times. In between those times, I ventured to a couple of different (higher priced) sushi places in the surrounding area. I ended up being disappointed with every other sushi place and missing and wishing that I had just drove the extra couple of miles to Hokkai. They offer Great quality sushi, great customer service for a good bang for your $buck. A must try.

I'm gonna go as far as saying that this place has the best AYCE sushi in Illinois (or at least in the suburban areas). Seriously, this place is AYCE with food that sometimes matches -- if not, surpasses -- the quality of other local non-AYCE sushi restaurants Sushi can be pricy, and it's easy to go overboard with the bill for even mediocre sushi. Getting the opportunity to eat as much as $50+ worth of decent sushi for only $19.99 per person (the AYCE sushi dinner price with lunch being ~$15.99) is a rare one; take advantage of this opportunity as long as this place exists with the quality that it currently has. As stated before, this place has REALLY good sushi for AYCE. The nigiri here have a nice balance of fresh fish and rice; they weren't too small or overpacked with rice either. The rolls too weren't over portioned with rice, and the overall presentation of the food is beautiful. Perhaps the most important thing I've to say is that the quality of the fish here is consistently great -- especially the salmon. I'll also add that this place does rolls fantastically (rolls are really something special here) and would recommend the Angry Dragon Roll and Green Turtle Roll to anyone. In the end, this place's sushi is good, especially for AYCE (THE SUSHI HERE IS AMAZING FOR AYCE). This place's atmosphere, decor, and service aren't too terrible either. This place certainly deserves the current yelp ratings it has now (~4.5 out of 5 stars).

It was good. I've been to multiple all you can eat sushi places, this place beats most. I'm a ginormous fan of the angry dragon rill and twister, but there are far too many fried rolls and not enough clean ones. Fish is quite fresh though, I enjoyed the hell of out the tuna and white tuna sashimi.

I dont write many reviews but this little sushi joint was so fantastic that i had to give it some props and like Laura C i dont want to see it go away because of lack of business. Im gonna get right to the point on this review and say this was probably the most fresh sushi i've ever had. I like the atmosphere of Ra, and all, but food comparison wise this was much better. All the fish just seem to melt in my mouth which ive never experienced before. The presentation was also very cool, so cool in fact i almost didnt want to eat and mess it all up. My wife was actually getting annoyed because i wouldnt let her touch the food until i took like 100 pics. The ambience of the place was also very trendy and modern and the only thing missing was more peoples. I went on sunday evening and my party were the only ones there. The server was also very sweet and took great care of us as well. You can tell they really take pride in providing great service/food and that in my opinion is what makes all the diff. All and all the place is a total home run and oh yea I almost forgot, the prices are very reasonable for what your getting. This is def my new go to for sushi, sorry Sushi mono, Ra, kyoto, sakana, but u might not see me for a min.

If you love sushi this place will impress you. We tried the any 3 rolls for 11.99 before 3pm. The rolls we had were the spicy tuna, spicy crab and California. Also had the avocado and shrimp roll and miso soup. This is the best sushi I have tried and by far the best tasting. The prices of the menu are not bad either. The rolls are perfectly stuffed with the featured ingredient. They don't overdue the rice which is the way it should be. I'm very picky about sushi, these don't fall apart like other places I've been to. We went on a Tuesday and the freshness of the fish left me wanting more. This will be the place I will frequent now. The service was friendly and genuine, they ask what you think. The decor on the inside is great, it's clean and neat. Don't be worried by the exterior strip mall, it's like a TARDIS on the inside!

  • Scott B.

This has become my favorite restaurant (sushi or otherwise) to go to over the past several months. The sushi is consistently fresh with excellent fish to rice ratio. The specialty rolls on the AYCE menu are all outstanding. My favorite is probably the Angry Dragon, but you really cannot go wrong. It is also very reasonably priced for both lunch and dinner. It is truly a hidden gem in a strip mall, but given the stellar yelp reviews, the crowd has been steadily growing over the past several months and I imagine this will not stop. If you are a sushi fan, you owe it to yourself to give this place a try. It cannot disappoint!

Wow! Ever been to an all you can eat sushi bar only to find out the sushi was awful. Not here! This might be one Of the best sushi values on the street! Really good quality sushi. Super White Tuna was really fresh, Salmon and Maguro were excellent. Tuna and avacado roll was outstanding. Paul's roll was delicious. Generous cuts of fresh fish that have never been frozen and not overstuffed with rice. I am a sushi lover and have been eating it for almost 30 years. Trust me when I say this is good quality sushi and a great value!

We had a groupon and have been dying to try the sushi because this place has amazing reviews. When you walk in you would never know you are in a strip mall. It's very trendy and cute on the inside. When you walk in they have sign for all you can eat lunch special for 15.99 a person and 19.99 a person for dinner. However it notes on the paper they give you they will charge you for any leftovers sushi you do not eat so make sure your eyes aren't bigger than your stomach! Since we had a groupon we weren't able to try this. We started with edamame which was actually pretty good and salty! We ordered fried rice for our kids and it was probably the best thing we ordered. My husband said he would go back for that. They have a lunch special where you can pick 3 roles for for $11.99 (so we wouldn't do all you can eat anyways). We ordered a philly roll, spicy tuna and a cucumber avocado. They were fair certainly not gross but nothing that blew you away either. We also go got a rainbow and volcano rolls off the speciality selection. They were both lacking flavor and seemed like a lot of filler in them. Overall if you are looking for cheap sushi this is your spot but you get what you pay for.

Went for sushi lunch buffet and despite the idea of sushi buffet it's made to order and it's amazing. Well worth the 15$ dollars bring that special someone or a group. Avoid the soup though, tasted God awful. Overall very attentive staff, clean, fresh, and fast food I would recommend this place to sushi lovers and haters. Something special in this so mall so come give it a try

A really great sushi place in Glen Ellyn. They have a nice variety of sushi, along with other items. The sushi was fresh and tasty. I can't eat sesame, and they had no problem meeting my need. The decor is modern and tasteful- a little chic! The wait staff was attentive and friendly, switching off to serve us. Overall, an excellent experience!

I agree with all that has been said about Hokkai - the food, the atmosphere/decor, the staff - but what I want to add is this. My wife and I discovered this place at 9:10pm on a Thursday. We called to make sure we could still come in and be served. They said yes. When we walked in we were greeted as if it were prime time on a Saturday night. Our waiter said emphatically to take our time, no rush, enjoy your dinner. We did. The soup, appetizer and sushi/rolls were fresh, delicious and very wallet friendly. I cannot say enough about what Hokkai is doing right. We have found our new go to place for sushi and will be bringing our friends here with us. Highly recommend.

I've been meaning to try this place since it opened and finally had a chance to go on Thursday with some friends to try out the AYCE menu. The sushi was spectacular, best we've had in a long time. A lot of reviews mention that the sushi is good for AYCE but I thought it was really good in general. Only complaint I would mention is that we ordered about 10 rolls during the first round, and when they were brought out, we were not told which rolls were which, it was just placed on our table. Not necessarily a problem as everything was delicious, but it would have been nice to know what was what so we know what to order again in the future. The food came out quickly after we ordered, but once we received our orders, the servers were a little inattentive, but that is pretty standard for AYCE. We had to wait to order more drinks at one point. One thing to note about the sushi...the rolls that contained cream cheese, Philly included, had more cream cheese than I think I've ever seen, but I prefer that. All in all, the food was good enough to return, and I would think the service will improve the longer they're open.

Not that this place is bad, by any means, but it's just adorable that suburbanites are rating this as a 5-star sushi joint. In my experience, if you don't regularly see JAPANESE people eating there at the bar, that means it's just targeted towards cute suburbanites who don't know any better. Typical maki roll menu. Signature rolls sauces tend to be too heavy and overpower the entire roll, many end up being too sweet. There's no specialty cocktail menu, just glass of wine offering, saki, beer. The miso soup isn't oversalted so that's a plus. Good place considering there's nothing else in the area. For the more "authentic" sushi place, look for a typical hole in the wall with a 5-star review, where you will overhear Japanese being spoken in the background.

  • Wally P.

This is really a 4-star place, but an extra star is warranted to help get business going here. Fresh, delicious, efficient, clean, friendly. What else can you ask for?? At very reasonable prices, this place is unbeatable in this area. The attendance has been sparse the last few times I've been in for lunch, so let's get some people into this place! You won't regret it.

This is by far the best sushi place we have found in the western suburbs. The sushi and maki are always delicious and beautifully presented. The servers and sushi chefs are always friendly. Also, they have a good selection of vegetarian and cooked maki. The food is very reasonably priced as well, and has an all-you-can eat menu.

How refreshing to find a restaurant to be enthusiastic about. Food gets a 5; service a 4. We dined there one Saturday night recently and were pleasantly surprised by the furnishing and decor and by the initial attentiveness of the waitstaff. Service went down after our drinks were delivered, having to wait a long time to order and the person who took our drink order never returned once to our table. Maybe they do a group thing, but it was not 100% successful. Nevertheless, we seemed to finally get a waitperson assigned to us and, while still having to flag that person down a few times [it had gotten busy, but they need more staff] the meal proceeded well. We ordered gyoza for a start, a wonderful pan seared dumpling with pork and spices on the inside. A very typical start for a sushi restaurant, this gyoza was particularly good. Could have used a little more sauce, but that was a minor shortcoming. Next, we ordered sashimi and a good variety of it as well. We were astonished as we saw platters go by. The artfulness of these sushi chefs is something I have never before seen, and we have been to quite a number of sushi restaurants through the years. Others are pleasant looking. Hokkai was breathtaking. Ours came with the rolls stacked on what could only be called a small wooden box[very light Asian wood, of course], raising them above the level of the rest of the fish. A beautiful assortment of fish awaited us resting on a bed of ti leaves and including an orchid. Very tastefully done. Wasabi was drier than usual and not as hot as most. Just use more. And speaking of tasteful, we loved every piece of sashimi we had. Salmon, tuna, yellow tail, red snapper, and even the squid was creamy, fresh, and a pleasure to partake. Rolls were good, although my wife's roll fell apart a little. Anything said a little negative here are minor shortcoming and the service might be better other than on a Saturday. Wait was minimal and we felt the prices were very fair, especially considering how high quality the fish tasted. We will definitely return and you should know the small storefront off Roosevelt road is a 20 minute drive for us. Just yummy. Do yourself a favor. If you like sushi, try this place soon. We did not try the cooked food but that was a minimal offer. Fish is king here. Also note, beer and wine only; not a full bar. I am guessing parking can be dodgy at times since there is a Binny's and Trader Joes in the same strip. Keep this in mind as you plan your evening.

Five-star service, very good sushi and excellent presentation. We came in with a Groupon to try this place out and will definitely be coming back for more. The waiter offered recommendations and we were pleased with everything. He was very attentive but not overbearing as other reviewers commented. We ordered the spicy tuna Gyoza off the special appetizer menu, the red dragon roll, volcano roll, and several pieces of sushi. Everything was very fresh nicely presented. The volcano roll had a little too much mayo for my taste but was very good nonetheless. Definitely recommend trying this place if you're in the area.

I'm a big big sushi guy. Iv gone to many sushi places. Came here for the first time and to compare this place to others iv been id have to say that the waiter we had was full of energy and very nice and the music they had playing was all new. The only thing that I did se a difference in was that the 2 sushi rolls didn't get me anywhere near full. So I ordered chicken tariaki and I was still hungry it could be because iv been working out and I have a larger appetite but I don't think that's the case. Otherwise I'm a pig. The good did taste great right up there with all the other places iv been to that I love.

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said: the sushi, atmosphere, and service here are world-class. My younger brother and I have both spent years eating sushi on the East and West coasts, and we agreed that this is the best sushi we've ever had. I was initially skeptical: if you just glance inside, it looks like there's nobody there. But, all of the tables are simply behind the sushi bar, and the restaurant itself is spotless, spacious, and extremely well-decorated. We visited at 3 pm on a Thursday, and were one of the only groups in the restaurant. However, every staff member we talked to was incredibly nice, our food came out very quickly, and all of it was absolutely delicious (and we ordered a ton of different things!). The food is all incredibly fresh, which is astonishing considering that this is a tiny restaurant in the middle of suburban Chicago. What we had of their wine selection was also really, really good. I hope that they get incredibly popular and busy, so that they can stay in business and I can come visit them every time I return to Glen Ellyn!

Ok so, on to my second review for this place! My first review was after my first visit here and guess what? Ive been coming back ever since! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! My boyfriend and I made this our regular sushi joint and when we go out for dinner for sushi, its implied we are going here, every time! The fish is so fresh and delish every single time! the presentation is fabulous and the choices for the all you can eat dinner are spectacular! We LOVE this place and i hope to never see it close or decrease its quality! We have become regulars here and will continue to come in! ANGRY DRAGON, CHICAGO, ROCK AND ROLL, and the HOKKAI ROLL (which is a new addition to the list) are our favorites!!! MMM also try the HARUMAKI spring rolls and the seaweed salad!!!!! OH SO DELICIOUS!!!! We frequently will bring in a bottle of wine with dinner and they only charge $5 for a corkage fee!!!! LOVE IT!!! The bathroom is nicely decorated and is clean as well! The ONLY thing I would EVER change about this place would be making it open a bit later as well as adding a specialty drink menu that includes fun martinis!!!! :)

I decided that Hokkai Sushi would be the next sushi destination that my friends and I would try. Based off of the Yelp reviews, the sushi sounded almost close to perfect. The ambience is a little weird with the neon lights and dark loungy feeling, it kind of felt as though we were in a night club. To add onto that weird feeling while eating sushi, the music was highly depressing. In order to keep up with the neon lights and ambience, the music should be loud (moderately so in order to still converse) but this music was classical and slow and just plain melancholic. As my friends and I conversed, we began to realize that our conversation was being influenced by the tone of the music. Also, the music was so quiet that we felt as though everyone in the restaurant could hear us, so we needed to whisper. My suggestion is to make the environment more balanced. They have specialty rolls and then just side rolls (which consist of 5 pieces each). The specialty rolls consist of ten pieces, I believe. I ordered the avocado roll and sweet potato tempura roll. Both rolls were delicious, but the sweet potato was excellent! They decorated each one of our plates differently with the sushi, which was cute and endearing. Our service was excellent as well. Just, pleae change the music or dim the lounge lights.

You don't have to know that unagi is eel and maguro is tuna to appreciate the fresh and delicious offerings at this new Glen Ellyn sushi restaurant. Located just a few steps from Trader Joe's in Pick Wick Place at Roosevelt and Main, Hokkai is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and staffed by people who are customer-friendly and sushi-smart. The menu is reasonably priced (lunch specials are around $13) and features nearly 100 items - from the ever popular beginner's favorite California Roll to the Green Dragon Roll (eel, cucumber, avocado topped with chef's special sauce and masago) with 18 kinds of sashimi I visited two days in a row this week and will be back for more soon!

Great prices, excellent staff, and the best quality sushi I've had in years. I go well out of my way to enjoy dinner here. I highly recommend it!

Great sushi and chicken fried rice. All you can eat sushi for $20, but be careful, anything you don't finish you have to pay for. Angry Dragon Roll was on point.

Love this place recently went with my family for dinner I don't like giving my best restaurants up but they do deserve so many compliments for their great food and presentation. The Hokkai roll is my favorite. Will definitely be back.

Ever since our (former) favorite Thai place in Wheaton decided to go 100% dry on us, we have been looking for a new and exciting Asian restaurant with BYOB. We found it in Hokkai Glen Ellyn, and granted there is a $5 corking fee, we gladly pay that because the food and atmosphere are FAB!! We've been back twice, and find interesting and tasty specials, great, delicate appetizers, quality sushi and rolls and our favorite, a teriffic Udon noodle entrée. Love the modern interior, and very friendly service. We'll be baaaaaack!!

This place just recently opened. The place is clean and nicely decorated! We ordered the American Dream Roll (4 stars), the Pop-up Roll (5 stars), and the Mountain Roll (3 stars). All of the fish was very, very fresh and the American Dream Roll and Pop-up Roll had great flavor. The only reason for the 3 star rating on the Mountain Roll is that it didn't have a lot of flavor to me, but the fish was fresh so it was still good. Our waiter was very attentive (and happy)! Overall a great experience, we will be back. Prices are right on par with other sushi places $4 -6 for regular rolls and $7-$12 for special rolls (depending on what is in it).

Amazing sushi. Get the Angel roll! My husband loves sushi and this is his favorite place. We drive 45 mins to eat here.. They use good quality and the decor is wonderful!!!

Ok so I went again with some friends and got everything the same except I tried the sweet potato roll. SOOOO GOOOOD! Definitely recommend it. Its like fried and crispy on the inside. I also tried the shumai this time, which is like a shrimp dumpling, pretty good too. You guys have to try this place!!

I have to admit I have only been to this plaice once, craving sushi rolls. One of the staff members recommended the Carnival roll. By far it was the best sushi roll I have ever had . I can't wait to go back . It looks very nice and clean big and luxurious :)

Very nice atmosphere for a store front in a strip mall. We had several different sushi rolls and all three were excellent, not the best I've had, but definitely the best at the reasonable price point they charge. The only negative was that we ate there on a Tuesday night and there was only 1 waiter and he had 5 tables, many of them were tables of 4. He did as good as he could keeping up with it all but the service was a little slow.

What a great place! I went shopping to Trader Joe's and stopped by before to order some rolls to go so I can pick up after shopping. I was so pleasantly surprised (after being disappointed in some other places around I tried). Sushi was delicious, definitely coming back soon! Rainbow roll and eel are my favorite.

We tried the all you can eat sushi dinner. The "scallops" were slices of imitation crab. Not cool. The rolls were a little over done. Spicy tuna was so bland I had to ask for siracha to out on top. The quality of fish for the sushi was good. The service was so slow that we just tipped the sushi chefs instead of the wait staff. The place was not full so no excuse for bad service. Might come back to sit at the counter but wouldn't sit in the dining room again.

Delicious sushi. We moved from the city a few years ago and we haven't been able t find comparable sushi in the suburbs. This place is a hidden gem. Also delicious fried rice and spring rolls! Must try!!!!

Dinner for 4 at Hokkai tonight...and couldn't be happier. Best sushi I have had in the suburbs and rivals some of my favorite places in the city. Super fresh fish and artfully prepared. Good service and close to home. What more could I ask for?

I hate to give this place a bad review and I have been here several times both for take-out and eat-in, but after going here tonight for a friends birthday dinner with 9 people total it was a disaster. The restaurant was not busy and the five people who ordered first waited over an hour for their sushi, while everyone who ordered 30 minutes after the first round received their food within 15-20 minutes of ordering. The birthday girl had to leave without even being able to eat her food. There was barely an apology and no explanation other than "we are very busy tonight". It's really too bad because the food and service are generally good, but tonight put a bad taste in everyone's mouth for this place and I doubt any of us will return.

Been to several all you can eat sushi places and this is by far the best. $16 for lunch and $20 for dinner, i encourage you to go for the dinner. There are a lot more interesting and great tasting rolls!

We stopped by for lunch and I ordered the 3 rolls/ 2 pieces of sushi lunch special for $12.99. Miso soup comes with all of the lunch specials although edamame is extra (just $3.50 for a big bowl). I had the spicy tuna, Alaska and shrimp tempura rolls. When they arrived, I noticed that they had a thin outer layer of rice and thought they might be trying to conserve on rice. After further thought, it dawned on me that I was actually getting the deal. Let's face it, rice is cheap and will easily fill you up. (As mentioned in previous reviews, I'm no expert when it comes to sushi but, as Peter Gabriel (then with Genesis) once sang, "I know what I like and I like what I know...".) All of the rolls were delicious and along with our appetizers, I walked out of there stuffed. My wife had the Angel Roll which is built with shrimp, crab meat and avocado. She loved it. Service was attentive without being cloying. The restaurant has had a major face lift and is clean and aesthetically pleasing. It's apparent that they haven't cut any corners in terms of the physical setting and, more importantly, their food. (A little footnote: This is the same space previously occupied by the Mexican restaurant that was busted for selling drugs out the back.) Hokkai is a great addition to the local restaurant scene with very solid food in a beautiful setting. Don't let the strip mall location deter you.

Would never have thought to go in there, but had such good reviews, and I ended up loving it. Great sushi and presentation on everything. Love the home made gyoza for an appetizer. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because we have had a couple of times with slow service, but nothing too horrible. Highly recommend!

I felt compelled to write this review after seeing the two 1-star reviews written on Valentines Day. I was also there on Valentines Day, so here is my take on the evening: Like many others,we waited a long time before even being greeted by a hostess. During this wait, I noticed that the guys making the sushi appeared to be working very hard- moving fast, stressed faces, no down time. At the time it was an innocent observation but in hindsight it told me about the current state of the restaurant. Once we were seated I realized that the 'hostess' was serving as well. Uh oh. Our order was taken promptly but we did wait a LONG time before getting our food. They were clearly understaffed, but the servers that were there were also working hard- literally RUNNING from table to table. During our wait we saw a couple tables be pretty rude to the servers, and one table just got up and left. I get leaving if you are hungry and frustrated, but the rudeness when they were clearly trying to me seemed a little over the top. Hangry gets the best of people, I guess! Anyway, to apologize for our long wait they gave us free edamame and wine. When our food came it was DELICIOUS. we ordered four different kinds of sushi and they were all fresh, nicely presented, and so tasty. Also reasonably priced. At the end of the evening they gave my husband a rose for him to give to me. It was a cute touch, and possibly another way of apologizing for the slow service. I think the KEY in all of this is that this restaurant is like 5-6 months old. They weren't open last year on Valentines Day, and it seemed they just did not expect the kind of business that they got that night. It seemed clear to me that they cared about the service and were trying hard, so if they just are a little better staffed I think they will do really well. They have all the tools in place: good food, good price, nice decor/atmosphere, and staff who cares. Just need to work the kinks out. We'll be back.

My wife and I stopped in today and had a fantastic lunch. Awesome sushi - very, very fresh & tasty. Our waiter explained how they minimize the rice on maki rolls to offer more fish, better taste/value to their customers. We both liked the decor and plan to go back for dinner soon. Give it a try!

Stay away from this place! Had reservations on a Friday night. Sat down at our table - no server. Finally, my husband waved down a young kid who worked there. We asked him to get our server - he then said he could take our order. Ordered drinks and 4 waters. No biggee - he only brought one water. Put in our order for all you can eat sushi. First came the seaweed salad - portion was ridiculously small. Then came Gyoza and Shumai. Both were deep fried and that was not expected. For the food coming from the kitchen, it was as if they just threw it on the plate with no attention to presentation or detail. They the sushi - WORST SUSHI EVER!!!! The tuna was ground and had NO flavor. We ate about half of it. The FINALLY, a server comes to clean our table and explains she will be charging us for the sushi we did not eat. WHAT?? We explained to her that we would have eaten all of it if it was worth eating. So, the bill came and she did not charge us. Good think or I was thinking about rearranging her wall décor with the uneaten sushi. Place is a joke of a restaurant.

Came in for 15.99 all you can eat lunch. You'd never guess how nice it is inside based on the basic strip-mall exterior. Dining room nice enough for semi-formal date. The appetizers are small and very fried, taste like they are from the freezer...(spring rolls, scallops, gyoza)...I'll skip these next time. Now the rolls....amazing! Easily equal or better than other sushi places I frequent. Only slightly disappointing roll was the eel, slightly fisher than usual. Gotta try rock n roll, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, rainbow. Made it out the door at ~$45 with tip. Not bad for 2 people considering the quality of the sushi, (ate 3 appetizers and 8 rolls). I'll be back for sure!

I ordered take out from Hokkai & did some shopping at Trader Joe's while they put together my order. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and the vegetable roll. Both were very good. Also ordered the seaweed salad -- it was a generous portion. Hokkai Sushi is located by Trader Joe's on Roosevelt Road (but it doesn't face Roosevelt -- it faces west & is just east of TJ's). They let me see the rest of the restaurant. It has a cool decor. They did a great job with the interior design. Definitely make this a go-to place for sushi in the western suburbs!

Horrible wait staff, and I mean horrible. We get there and we weren't even acknowledged by anyone for 25 minutes. When I finally flagged down a waitress she seemed disgruntled that I was doing so. She then informed us that we couldn't use our groupon and basically screwed us out of 40 bucks.

Had sushi take out from here as our first visit to this place. The rolls where outstanding. I loved the Sweet 16 roll and the chefs special roll (though I am not sure what it was). This place was recommended to us and now I know why. I think this place is our new favorite sushi place. The place was very clean and had a great vibe to it. Only one couple eating in at the time but it was NYE and it seemed that a lot of people where getting take out. This place is a winner!

We've had dinner here twice, and both times the food was delicious. The restaurant is clean and contemporary in style. The staff is friendly and attentive. Service is very prompt. We've had "hot plate" chicken teriyaki which was served on a bed of fresh, sauteed squash and carrots, and our favorite sushi roll is the Rock 'N Roll (cream cheese, tempura shrimp, the whole roll tempura fried topped with spicy mayo). This is our favorite suburban sushi place, and we want other people to patronize it so it will stay in business! Go give them a try!

This was a last minute impromptu lunch after shopping at Trader Joes. A friend of mine was hungry and wanted to sit down and eat. I must say this place is amazing on the inside, the service was excellent, the waiter was very attentive almost too attentive but that was not a deal breaker, nor worth lacking a star . The sushi, though I am NOT a connoisseur , was excellent! I couldn't get enough of it I want to go back and cannot wait to go back. I love the prices I love the ambiance.

Not bad sushi, if you can get some! Awful service will keep you away sadly. We ordered and then received half of our order after an hour and then never got the rest of it after another hour wait. I looked up the reviews for this place before hand and am amazed at the ratings it received after people ate there. The owners must be paying people to write them. If you want food from this place do yourself a favor and just starve yourself when you're hungry for two hours and then have your significant other kick you in the balls to simulate the frustration you would go through.

Hokkai is tucked away in the same shopping center as Trader Joes. I mention this as it is hard to find. The non-descript storefront hides a real gem: great food, reasonable prices, friendly staff, and tasteful decor. The quality of the sushi and sashimi is excellent and pride is taken in the food prep and presentation. They use tiny LED lights to showcase the rolls. I am also a fan of the tempura which is offered on the appetizer menu. The shrimp tempura with vegetables ($4.50) or the veggie ($3.95) are served crispy and hot without the greasy after taste. We are glad Hokkai is in the neighborhood and are lucky we don't have to trek downtown for a good meal.

My first thought when this opened was "really, another sushi restaurant?" Stopped in for a light lunch yesterday, and omg, it was outstanding. Great decor, great service. Ate by myself at the bar -- 2-roll lunch special and a piece of super white tuna (my fave). As Ron (another reviewer notes), I also saw the thin layer of rice but had the same reaction as him -- more seafood vs. rice -- gotta love it. The spicy tuna could have been a bit spicier, but the flavor was a cut above! Got the American Dream (I think that's the name) which also rocked and the super white tuna tasted as fresh as it gets. Will definitely be back.

My husband and I had lunch here yesterday. It's a beautiful restaurant that has decent sushi. The first thing I noticed was the lack of rice on the maki rolls which I thought was great! Instead of having a mouth full of rice you get more of the fish, veggies, etc. The fish was very fresh! Our waiter was very attentive but to us a little too much (I can't believe I'm saying this.) He was very happy and nice but checked on us a little too much, trying to have a conversation, pushing us to come back with friends and family, and several times patting my husbands back. All this while we're trying to eat. It was a little much. In the end the food was good and I'm sure we'll be back.

I'm a sushi snob and normally won't eat at a sushi restaurant that serves "all you can eat", but the sushi is excellent. I highly recommend you give this restaurant a try. You won't be disappointed.

What a great find. Located right next to Trader Joe's and Chicago Prime. We had a wonderful lunch. Very fresh fish with a nice variety of sushi and roll options. They have weekday lunch specials that are reasonably priced. We will be going back very soon.

We were the only people in the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. The atmosphere was very nice (modern, relaxing), the service was excellent (fast and very friendly), and the sushi is some of the best we've ever had. To top it off, the prices are very reasonable for such nice sushi and service. I really hope more people discover this place, so that the restaurant gets more business and stays open. I'll definitely go back there soon.

Best sushi I have had. I went with some friends who have been to Japan and they said this is the place. The sushi is so incredibly fresh. The staff is wonderful. Even the miso soup is some of the best I've ever had. Great prices too. Give it a chance. Let's keep it in business.

my visit was in response to laura c's plea for yelpers to give hokkai a try. did that today, and was very impressed. the space that for years was occupied by various mediocre restaurants, has been transformed into a calm, zen like venue. I had the lunch special-all you can eat for $16, and it was great. I had the shrimp dumplings, fried scallops, avocado shrimp roll, and tempura shrimp roll. all were very good, as was the service. a great new spot in glen Ellyn.

A Groupon enticed my husband and I to check this place out. We ate here on a Saturday at 4:30. We knew we would be the only people in the restaurant which was kind of a cool experience. The decor is nice and everything looks very clean. The sushi was fresh and presented very well. The only reason I give only 3 stars is because of the server and the overall cost. We ordered 3 rolls and two non-alcoholic drinks but were probably asked 4 or 5 times if we wanted to order something else. Geesh, dude, back off. I had no problem with him asking once but this guy was very persistant and it got old fast. The cost of the sushi was not extravagant but not a great value. I might stick to AYCE sushi in the future at another location, unless we find another great Groupon deal.

Went with family for my birthday and loved it! Best place ive been to for sushi! The altmosohere was great, the waitor was really nice and patient with us, he even explained and showed us the proper way to use chopsticks since we were all wondering the 'right' way. Anyways, i got the angry dragon and it was amazing! It was hot n spicy but crunchy as well to give an amazing taste!

Great little place tucked into a shopping strip. Do not be fooled by the outside. Cool, contemporary decor. Friendly staff. We ate an early dinner at 3:30pm and had the place to ourselves. The food was fresh and the prices can't be beat. I will for sure be back here. The Red Dragon is AMAZING! Also, the Paradise Roll was a new twist for me...tempura fried banana inside?!? Yes, please!

This place is okay. I eat sushi a lot so I have high standards. The sushi here is fresh although the presentation is merely adequate. Skip the salad and go with the miso soup. Great atmosphere and the decor is sophisticated urban which was unexpected in a strip mall!

Hope this place makes it! Excellent, fresh, tasty, well presented sushi! Only issue was uneducated server girl who seated us, basically didn't know anything. Seated us and brought water saying "let me know if you need anything else". Yes-we need drinks and food! After that, we were waited on by the real waiter who was great and knowledgable. Girl came by many times asking how things were and calling everyone "guys"--kind of uncomfortable, but we will be back!
